While most people don’t realize it, the U.S. government has heavily subsidized corn-raised beef, Mountain Dew sweetened with corn syrup, and soybean oil. According to government statistics, the government spent $11 billion in 2012 on commodity crops, and Iowa received the largest amount. Meanwhile, less than half of government subsidies are spent on produce and other healthy foods. Despite these subsidies, the U.S. government recommends that half of the plate be made up of fruits and vegetables.

While severe food insecurity is extremely rare, moderate food insecurity is extremely concerning. People with moderate food insecurity often sacrifice other basic needs to purchase enough food to eat. They often opt to eat cheap and processed foods that are not always the best for their health. As a result, there’s a sharp rise in obesity, partly as a result of food insecurity. Food insecurity has led to the widespread availability of cheap processed and highly processed foods.

COVID-19, the virus responsible for foodborne illness, can survive on surfaces for a short time. Unlike other types of viruses, COVID-19 is only active for a day or two after contaminating food. Fortunately, there are a number of simple steps you can take to prevent the spread of this disease. The Food and Drug Administration recommends four steps to ensure safe food handling. The Food and Drug Administration also offers FAQs on food safety.

Food stamps are available through local agencies that help people apply for the program. Local agencies help people apply for benefits, explain eligibility requirements, and give assistance with the application process. The food stamp program provides monetary assistance for food for people who are unemployed or working in low-wage jobs. Applicants are estimated to spend 30% of their monthly income on food, so if they qualify, they should use this program to supplement their income. The benefit amounts are calculated by multiplying the household net income by 0.3. After the amount is calculated, the person is subtracted from the maximum allotment for their household size.

The Department of Agriculture has determined that about 48 million Americans experience food insecurity. The numbers of people suffering from food insecurity has risen fivefold since the late 1960s. In 2012, food insecurity was the leading cause of death among low-income NHANES participants. However, more research is needed to better understand what this largely invisible problem really means for the country. With the help of this program, more people can live healthy lives. There are many ways to address food insecurity.

Many SNAP recipients are still food insecure even after receiving benefits. This is because many people who qualify for SNAP do not apply or recertify their eligibility. By lowering the barriers to applying for and receiving SNAP, these programs could significantly reduce the incidence of food insecurity. If you are looking for a food stamp program, you can check out the list of retailers that accept SNAP. And if you already qualify, check out these online stores.
